Malware has reached epidemic levels, with nearly 1 million new or variant strains being identified during 2006, and more than 8 million discovered during 2008!

The terms Network Security and Information Security are often confused.

Network Security refers to perimeter defence (firewall) that keeps data protected against intruders (hacking).

Information Security is the protection of data against malware attacks. The term malware embraces computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware and crimeware.

Data Leak Prevention or DLP, which is a growing threat to business, is often also classified under the term Information Security. Put simply this refers to the theft, or unauthorised consumption and / or sharing of confidential data. Data needs to be structured, and access allowed through permissions, which require a user name and password. This is referred to as the Network Security Policy.
